Hypnosis – The Reality Behind All The Myths

Hypnosis and its subset, hypnotherapy, have always been mired in myths. Some regard them to be occult whereas others discard them as pseudo science. Following are some of the popular myths about hypnosis and the reality behind them.

Hypnosis has no link with any sort of mystical arts. It is a very simple technique, which can be explained without much difficulty with the help of psychology and other scientific methods. Even people who have seen hypnosis on others usually refuse to believe in it. They say that hypnotised subjects allow practitioners to be successful in their art by not displaying enough will power to block the influence of their words. But nothing could be farther from the truth. Hypnosis can be done on anyone irrespective of his or her mental strength.

Another notion about hypnosis that people have made up arbitrarily is that it is an altered state of consciousness. A hypnotized person is totally conscious of his environment. During the hypnotic state, the subject relaxes completely and is therefore able to focus fully on the suggestions provided by the practitioner.

Some scientists have found that hypnosis works on just 5% of the human population, and this is another prevalent myth. The scientists are somewhat true in their own way, because they tried hypnotising the group by the same hypnosis technique without considering individual differences in character and temperament. Hypnosis can’t be straight jacketed like that and clicks only if there are different methodologies for different personality styles.

People also tend to connect hypnosis to meditation. However, interaction between the subject and the practitioner is paramount in hypnosis, while meditation is like an appointment with the self without any communication involved. Trance too has no connection with hypnosis at all. The person doesn’t communicate to achieve a state of trance, while hypnosis is not possible without communication.

It is commonly thought that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot cause changes in physique or in behavioural patterns of an individual. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is abnormal to the body. But by mentally conditioning a person to abandon addictive habits like overeating and constant smoking, and by raising one’s inspiration levels, hypnosis can bring about significant physical alterations in an individual and ensure a healthier body.

If an individual believes in all the misconceptions that prevail regarding hypnotherapy and doesn’t go for a hypnotic session, then he will himself block his way to a happier and healthier life.
